Logical form of Hintikka’s sentence
نویسنده
چکیده
In the article some arguments for Hintikka claim from [5], that sentences like: “Some relative of each villager and some relative of each townsman hate each other” have branching logical form non expressible in elementary logic, are considered and then refuted. Attention is focused mainly on referential and inferential arguments proposed in [9].

Hintikka’s Thesis Revisited
We discuss Hintikka’s Thesis [Hintikka 1973] that there exist natural language sentences which require non–linear quantification to express their logical form. Our basic assumption is that the criterion for adequacy of logical form is its compatibility with sentence truth conditions. It can be established by observing linguistic behaviour of language users. Our empirical research shows that the...
متن کاملBranching Quantification vs. Two-way Quantification
We discuss the thesis formulated by Hintikka (1973) that certain natural language sentences require non-linear quantification to express their meaning. We investigate sentences with combinations of quantifiers similar to Hintikka’s examples and propose a novel alternative reading expressible by linear formulae. This interpretation is based on linguistic and logical observations. We report on ou...

متن کاملFORMAL EPISTEMOLOGY: Some open topics, background and bibliography
The issue of logical omniscience – should knowledge be closed under logical consequence, should agents know all tautologies, or be at least committed to know them, should knowledge be closed under conjunction, etc. – and the possibility of studying epistemic operators where logical omniscience can fail is still the object of a great deal of attention both by logicians and formal epistemologists...
متن کاملAgainst logical form
Conceptions of logical form are stranded between extremes. On one side are those who think the logical form of a sentence has little to do with logic; on the other, those who think it has little to do with the sentence. Most of us would prefer a conception that strikes a balance: logical form that is an objective feature of a sentence and captures its logical character. I will argue that we can...
